Anne Marie Barnett

‘Hi. I’m Anne Marie Barnett and was born in Ayrshire and have lived in Scotland all my life. I remember drawing and painting from a very early age and currently I work with paint, sculpture, digital, mixed media and installation, responding with vibrant, abstract, visually striking work. I haven’t truly discovered what kind of artist I am yet and enjoy looking, experimenting and making happy accidents!

I have worked in creative-related roles for nearly 40 years – from a paste-up artist at 16 (when there were no computers!) to a graphic designer and digital 3D modeller with BAE Systems (large defence company).

My 3D modelling role consisted of creating digital scenery and models for training simulators and allowed me to travel around the world. I provided training courses in Hong Kong and the Netherlands, working with the Army, UK and Netherlands Navy and the Royal Air Force. I later worked in Event Management and at 45, I became a chartered marketer and joined the land management and property company Bell Ingram.

Four years later, I became marketing manager for the wonderful Scottish Dance Theatre (based at Dundee Rep). Being in a creative theatre environment prompted the need to create something of my own and I left full-time employment and enrolled as a arts student at Perth UHI.

When I’m not creating art, I go and see art – as the more I see, the more inspired I become. I regularly practice yoga, love walking, cooking, gardening, cycling, travelling and have been a digital volunteer, supporting older people with technology, at Perth library for the past 3 years. I am passionate about helping to bridge the huge gap that exists between technology and the older generation. Sharing my knowledge allows them to become more connected in the digital world and communicate with their friends and families, which can make a real difference to their lives.’
